As the holiday season approaches, it’s only natural to have some Christmas CDs playing on the stereo as the kids open their presents on the big day. It’s also a good idea to add to your collection of great Christmas music on CD, just to keep from hearing the same performances every year. Of course, there are many CDs for Christmas that sadly go overlooked by most of the world; ones that often become perennial favorites from the moment they are first enjoyed.
A typical example of this is John Fahey’s “The New Possibility,” a 1968 album that contains some of the best Christmas Music on CD that you may ever hear. At the time of its release, it was the first album to present familiar Christmas songs in an acoustic guitar format. “Joy to the World” and Fahey’s “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen Fantasy” are immediate standouts. This is an excellent Christmas CD, which makes for great background music as you go about your holiday celebrations.
Today’s Popular Christmas Music on CD can be a mixed bag, so your best bet is to look for “various artists” collections that appeal to the type of music you like best. For the blues fan, “Blue Yule: Christmas Blues and R&B Classics” on the Rhino label could be just the thing. Everyone from John Lee Hooker to Lightnin’ Hopkins and even Canned Heat are represented here, with songs that will positively rock the house this Christmas CD season.
Even Bob Dylan has a Christmas CD. 2009’s “Christmas in the Heart” features the scratchy-voiced troubadour’s versions of well-known religious and secular songs, including “Here Comes Santa Claus,” “The First Noel” and even “Must Be Santa,” a song originally recorded by Mitch Miller in the late 1950s.
If you’re not one to take the season so seriously, you can’t go wrong with some of the best Christmas music on CD, as filtered through the mind of popular radio host Dr. Demento. His two “Demented” Christmas CDs are sure to have you laughing your way through the holidays.
If you’re on a budget, and lucky enough to have a radio station in your area that adopts a Christmas radio format, you can always use that as an alternative to Christmas CDs. However, with all of the commercial breaks for Christmas Day Movie Releases and Christmas Movies, you might just want to stock up on some music to keep from breaking up the mood.
